Vertical slats of solid walnut, spaced in a rhythm that tightens and releases like a bar of music — the cadence the piece is named for. Folded, it is a column of wood; opened, it plays light across a whole wall. An ASK design, built to order in our own workshop.

The making
Cadence began as a measuring exercise — a wall of scrap slats pinned up at even spacing, then nudged until the intervals stopped being even and started being musical. Each slat is ripped from solid walnut, matched for grain, and set to its own pitch: 28 millimetres where the rhythm tightens, 46 where it releases. The panels are joined with full-height brass piano hinges, so the screen folds flat to a single column and opens without a wobble. The spacing is drawn once per build; your wall gets its own bar of music.
The lead time is 6–12 weeks, made to order. Drawings first, then the slat pitch set out full-size for your approval, then the ripping, the hinging and the slow finish — the full method is on the craft page. For wood left the way it grew, see live-edge furniture.
